The Fifth Edition of the Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous was held between 10th and 12th December and was this year additionally supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand as a showcase to promote the on-water lifestyle that continues to gain popularity here in Phuket. Hosted by Infinite Luxury, in collaboration with Kata Rocks from their incredible location on the West coast of Phuket, this was a time to get together and show support for Phuket ready for when tourism can return in full force.
Day 2 of the event saw the fleet cruise from Kata to Kamala beach where the Intercontinental Resort hosted a magnificent brunch for owners and guests. Always a great day, and a time to network and meet up with many of the participants over some fabulous food and drinks before a slow cruise back to the Kata anchorage in time for sundowners by the clubhouse pool.
The Saturday saw a new inclusion to this year’s event; the Kata Rocks Poker Run. A fun-filled day where 14 teams on speedboats of all shapes and sizes circumnavigated Phuket, making stops along the way at partner locations to collect a playing card which would eventually be presented back at Kata Rocks in order to see who had the best hand.
Whilst all skippers and crews were reminded that this was “not necessarily a race”, it was all guns blazing at the start line as the fleet set off looking to set a benchmark time and claim the unofficial ‘Blue Riband’. Lee Marine’s Premier Composites 38 ‘ATARI’ was the first to cross the finish line, with a time of 2 hours and 14 minutes with others close behind. An exciting day on the water was had by all, and a new way to see the island discovered.
The weekend was wrapped up by the KRSR Closing Party which was themed ‘Kings and Queens of Atlantis’. A sparkling night was enjoyed by all, with some incredible music and performances to set the tone.
A big thanks from Team Lee Marine to the owners and guests of Riviera 68SMY FATBOY for taking part in the event, and for forming the fastest team on the Poker Run! Thanks also must go to Richard Pope, CEO of Kata Rocks, for keeping the event going at a time when it would have been easy to postpone. As one of, if not the only, marine lifestyle event in Phuket this year, it was a privilege to be involved, and we are all looking forward to the 2021 edition which promises to be bigger and better than ever.
